"I work for Reuters. I’m a journalist in the media business.

Back in 2008, I sat in a conference and reviewed some proposals to integrate news sources focused on electronic gaming into our RSS service as niche content providers.

We considered IGN, Gamespot, and a few other syndicated online info feeds.

Now, in order to white label a source as affiliated with Reuters, you need to run through a checklist of ~100 items that are necessary for journalistic integrity. The source and its organization has to score at least a 60 out of 100 for it to be considered fair and unbiased.

These tests are carried out by senior journalists, editors, and investigators.

NONE of the gaming publications scored higher than a 15. For reference, the National Enquirer scored a 38 and the MSNBC blogosphere scored 44.

Some failures included:
- Economic ties with publishers
- Acceptance of favors
- 0% of staff held journalism degree
- Very small percentage worked in other major publications
- No real editing process
- No accountability

tl;dr: Gaming “journalism” is a joke and the laughingstock of reporting media. Continue to read these publications if you want, but assume that everything you read is biased or an outright lie.”

Gaming news is officially worse than supermarket tabloids folks. Let that sink in for a while. These people are are several steps below “IS BRAD PITT CHEATING ON ANGELINA???” (via bonglorio)

Also “they shouldn’t call it feminism. I support humanism.”

One of those things that sorta sounds reasonable at first glance, but in fact isn’t really. Besides the fact that the people saying this don’t understand the actual goals of feminism, another reason this is bad occurred to me (maybe it’s obvious, but no one’s mentioned it to me yet). We’ve already seen how eager a certain male demographic is to hijack social issues to either focus on themselves or censor the voices they don’t like (actual censorship unlike
"maybe you shouldn’t objectify women so much"). Labels are important, and if the movement was called humanism, I feel it would be that much easier for the men to silence the women within it.

I spent the morning reading the comments on a GameIndustry.biz article about Sarkeesian getting some serious death threats. It broke down about how you’d expect. Started with a group of guys saying the site was going downhill for posting an article about some so un-newsworthy and calling for the article to be taken down. Then it moved on to the usual bits about Sarkeesian herself and feminism.

Why is it so hard for so many guys to not take it personally when someone says that men, as a demographic, are assholes? There’s one lone woman in there bravely posting her views and she gets a lot of flak for not remaining composed after three days and 150 comments of guys trying to take the moral high ground calling criticism “censorship.”

One guy posted something along the lines of “I’m a supporter of feminism, but, don’t you think your tone is too angry? It’s hard to be a supporter when you get so mad at men.” She understandably replied, “I’m not going to change my tone, and if my tone is enough for you to withhold your support, you were never a supporter of feminism in the first place.”

I could go on. There’s nearly 150 comments-worth of material in there…..

"I used to respect this site until they started to push their FEMINIST AGENDA ALL THE TIME!!!!!"
