There has only been five female characters comfirmed playable compared to fifteen male characters.

I’m amazed at those exact numbers because 33% is the point where men will start thinking there’s a majority of women in a group.

In one study, participants were asked to rank the humor in various cartoon captions. Half of the captions had been written by men, and half by women. When not told who wrote what, the participants judged them almost equally funny. In fact, based on the scores given in this experiment, men are just 2.2 percent more likely to be funny than women. Yet 90 percent of the participants agreed with the stereotype that men are funnier. Talk about a mind-bogglingly huge difference in perception versus reality.

And it gets weirder — when the participants were asked which gender they thought wrote a caption, the funnier ones were almost always assumed to be by men and the less funny ones by women. This might be expected, considering their stated bias. Even when told the name and gender of the person who wrote each caption, within a short time the participants started misattributing the funny ones to men. In other words, even when they knew that women had written some of the funniest captions, the bias that men are funnier was so ingrained that it made them misremember who had written what.

4 Ways We’re Programmed to Think Women Aren’t Funny by Kathy Benjamin (via bestoffates)

This is one of the best articles of all time, and I will always reblog quotes from it.

So you don't want to be racist, but you'll let stuff talking crap about white people through. Great job there.

As a white person I am not offended by anything in that quote.  A setting where white people have fucked up everything and it’s all terrifying?

I live in that world now, that’s just art imitating life my friend.

making HONEST ANTAGONISTS who believe they’re in the right and firmly believe in what they’re doing is SO MUCH MORE INTERESTING than making them “crazy” because of some outside influence. make villains who believe they are the protagonists

Reblogging this because it keeps showing up on my dash and I keep not-quite raining on the parade, but it seems like everyone thinks this means something different than it does, so I guess I’ll rain on it a little bit.I’m afraid this motion has nothing to do with conquering the gender binary or whatever Tumblr is really happy about to be reblogging it so heavily. It’s not about making little children feel like they can get whichever toy they prefer. It’d be nice if it was, but I’d be shocked if that was the case. No, the girl toy here is a My Little Pony. Which means that the *real* reason for this notice is that a bunch of bronies, as there are bajillions of photos and videos of them doing, are coming into fast food restaurants and buying several happy meals. They threw pissy fits when asked if they wanted the “boy or girl” toy, insisting that My Little Pony isn’t for girls or whatever, again, only saying this because of overwhelming evidence that bronies do this shit. Management eventually has enough of it, asks employees to just ask if people want Skylanders or My Little Pony so they won’t have any more disgusted bronies getting mad that their precious fandom is targeted at crappy dumb little girls.
So the short version is: this little paper unfortunately means the exact opposite of what you think it means, socially speaking. It was put up because grown-ass men get all pissy when it’s suggested that they like a thing for girls.

A study, to appear in the Fall 2014 issue of the academic journal Perspectives on Politics, finds that the U.S. is no democracy, but instead an oligarchy, meaning profoundly corrupt, so that the answer to the study’s opening question, “Who governs? Who really rules?” in this country, is:

“Despite the seemingly strong empirical support in previous studies for theories of majoritarian democracy, our analyses suggest that majorities of the American public actually have little influence over the policies our government adopts. Americans do enjoy many features central to democratic governance, such as regular elections, freedom of speech and association, and a widespread (if still contested) franchise. But, …” and then they go on to say, it’s not true, and that, “America’s claims to being a democratic society are seriously threatened” by the findings in this, the first-ever comprehensive scientific study of the subject, which shows that there is instead “the nearly total failure of ‘median voter’ and other Majoritarian Electoral Democracy theories [of America]. When the preferences of economic elites and the stands of organized interest groups are controlled for, the preferences of the average American appear to have only a minuscule, near-zero, statistically non-significant impact upon public policy.”

To put it short: The United States is no democracy, but actually an oligarchy.

US Is an Oligarchy Not a Democracy, says Scientific Study | Common Dreams

If we had a truly independent and adversarial press in my country, this would be a big news story, but they still haven’t found that plane, so … whaddayagonnado right?

okay thats real funny and all but why would did you decide to photograph a group of strangers without their permission just to upload their picture onto the internet and make them the punchline of some half-assed joke. dont you think thats even more shitty than their taste in hats or w/e

i’m 98% sure these are young orthodox jews you FUCKING JACKASSES

These aren’t fedoras, they’re hats used by Yeshivish and Hasidic Jews because their faith requires them to keep their heads covered. Also, you can see the Payot (sidelocks) on the older ones growing in. ALSO, two of them have the same pamphlet, they probably just got out of school or a service. A L S O you can even see the Tallit hanging out from under their clothes.
Next time please try rubbing two brain cells together long enough to consider a situation that isn’t “haHA they’re WEArinG HATs that KINDA VAGUELY LOOK like a fedora this is COMEDY GOLD”

They did something right

About time.

OH My GOD!! I thought there was no way for this to be real. This is so wonderful!!!!!!!!

It’s about time that the SCOTUS got something right!

I don’t think people understand what a HUGE step forward this is.

  • Guns increase the probability of death in incidents of domestic violence.1
  • Firearms were used to kill more than two-thirds of spouse and ex-spouse homicide victims between 1990 and 2005.2
  • Domestic violence assaults involving a firearm are 12 times more likely to result in death than those involving other weapons or bodily force.3
  • Abused women are five times more likely to be killed by their abuser if the abuser owns a firearm.4
  • A recent survey of female domestic violence shelter residents in California found that more than one third (36.7%) reported having been threatened or harmed with a firearm.5 In nearly two thirds (64.5%) of the households that contained a firearm, the intimate partner had used the firearm against the victim, usually threatening to shoot or kill the victim.6
  • Laws that prohibit the purchase of a firearm by a person subject to a domestic violence restraining order are associated with a reduction in the number of intimate partner homicides.7
